Downtraining is More Than Breathing

Writer: Nicole CozeanNicole Cozean

Often breathing techniques are both the beginning and end of what we focus on when it comes to 'downtraining.' But there's so much more we can be doing, especially when it comes to the vagus nerve.

5 Reminders When Treating Chronic Pain

Pelvic PT Rising: The pelvic health tools to make you a better clinician and/or a more successful business owner. We want every single pelvic health practitioner to be more confident and successful in your practice and career!

  • Clinical Courses: Game-changing online courses to make you more confident, challenge your thinking and improve patient outcomes

  • Business Resources: Helping 500+ pelvic health practitioners confidently start, grow and build their dream business!

Breathing techniques are fantastic and important, but they also have their challenges for patients.

They take time to work. They are dependent on the patient actually doing them. They can feel a bit dismissive to some patients, especially if we don't explain them well.

In our Downtraining Masterclass, we argue for broadening our definition of what constitutes downtraining.

Downtraining definition: Any intervention designed to reduce tension in the pelvic floor and/or central nervous system.

In the Central Nervous System category of downtraining we listed 15 different possible interventions. We're excited about vagus nerve techniques because we can actually implement them in our sessions!

And we give our patients the ability to do what we are asking.

As Nicole said in the full 'sode...

"We can't prescribe breathing practices to our patients and expect them to work if they can't do them correctly." - Nicole Cozean
